You can still try socks. My first (well my second try all by myself first) socks were made from recycled sweater yarn. I used the International Socks of Doom pattern for the heel and toe, but I just did a 2x2 rib for the cuff and stockinette the rest of the way. You shoudl go with this pattern... it is afterall international.
